Augmented Reality is likely to become mainstream in the near future. With Facebook and SnapChat aiming to bring it to masses, the technology aims to drive consumer engagement and provide users with memorable and fun experiences. Recently, we have seen a number of industries showing great interest to AR. E.g. consumer packaged goods (CPG) manufacturers use Augmented Reality to give shoppers more information about the products, show video, display customer reviews as well as provide an opportunity to find cheapest prices and buy goods in the nearest store.

Using AR in advertising is another example of technology application. How to capture consumer attention in both innovative and entertaining way? Through Augmented Realty which allows to bring static images to life. People can scan a printed magazine, billboard or poster with a mobile phone and see branded video, images or 3D view of the product. In fact, it can be any information that agency or brand would like to communicate to its audience.

Now it seems the time is coming for entertainment industry. Escape rooms, live theaters and themed parks show an increased attention to AR innovative technology. How can it work for escape rooms?

Escape rooms are designed to provide interactive games and unique entertainments. Visitors are looking for adventures and they expect to get unforgettable experiences coming to escape rooms with friends and family or co-workers as a part of team-buildings. Normally, they are locked in a room for 60 minutes, during which they need to find hidden clues, solve challenging puzzles and unlock amazing secrets. Participants need to use brainpower, teamwork and an observant eye to escape the room before time runs out.

AR technology can provide an entirely new and intriguing experience! What if visitors could:

  • Scan a map on a wall and discover the hidden clue? Or,
  • Scan a picture of Sherlock Holmes and see the next puzzle to solve? Or,
  • Find a book, open it on a certain page and scan it to be informed about the next steps? Or,
  • Scan an image with a scrambled text to identify what is behind? Or,
  • Listen to an altered voice which might provide the final code to escape in time?

There could be a variety of ways and use cases. These are some of examples how AR can make user experiences immersive and more interactive.

ROAR Augmented Reality platform provides tools for escape rooms to create their own AR experiences. As a self-service platform, it enables to add Video, Audio, Text, Images, 3D view and more.

The platform has been built for non-technical users. So creating AR experiences is easy and simple. In fact, it can take as few as 5–10 minutes to create an AR experience, subject to availability of digital assets. Creating AR experiences on ROAR website is free.

Once the AR experience is created and published on the web, escape rooms can use it for entertaining their customers. For this purpose, they need to download the ROAR Augmented Reality app on a ‘magic’ device (aka: iPad, tablet or mobile phone) and provide this device to visitors. Voila!

From this moment, the game can start and the countdown begins. People will need to figure out and find images that trigger AR content. Once a relevant image is discovered, they need to tap on the device screen and scan the image. Immediately, AR content will be displayed on screen to provide a clue to the next tricky riddle.
